Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has issued a stern warning to his Lionel Messi-led squad, urging them not to underestimate Cape Verde ahead of their World Cup round of 32 clash.
The reigning world champions topped Group J with a near-flawless campaign, but now face a Cape Verde side that has already made history as the smallest country by population ever to reach the menâs World Cup knockout stage.
Making their tournament debut, Cape Verde were drawn into a daunting Group H alongside former champions Spain and Uruguay, as well as Saudi Arabia. Most pundits expected the African minnows to exit in the first round.
Instead, they defied all predictions by grinding out three consecutive draws â a stunning 0-0 clean sheet against Spain, a thrilling 2-2 comeback against Uruguay, and a hard-fought stalemate with Saudi Arabia. That improbable run saw them advance as group runners-up, setting up a showdown with Scaloniâs Argentina.
Speaking ahead of the round of 32 clash Scaloni was asked about the upcoming match and immediately stressed the need for respect.
âOn Cape Verde, Iâm not surprised they qualified,â Scaloni said during his postgame press conference. âThey made things very difficult for every opponent they faced. They are a tough team and theyâll make life difficult for us.
He highlighted their defensive resilience and tactical discipline, noting: âThey frustrated Spain, one of the tournament favorites. Uruguay couldnât beat them, and neither could Saudi Arabia. That tells you everything about their organization and belief.â
Scaloni also acknowledged that while Argentina are favorites on paper, Cape Verdeâs fearless approach and physical style could pose unique challenges for his aging stars.
With Messi continuing to serve as Argentinaâs undisputed focal point, Scaloni emphasized that his team must match Cape Verdeâs intensity from the first whistle.
âWe have the experience and the quality, but that alone doesnât win matches,â he added. âWe have to earn it. They will fight for every ball, and we must be ready for that.â
The Round of 32 fixture is expected to draw global attention, as Cape Verde looks to continue their fairytale run against one of the tournamentâs heavyweights.
